On December 11, 1996, in Sofia, 94 Bulgarian municipalities united their efforts to represent and protect the interests of local authorities, to legally guarantee local self-government, to develop and improve the work of Bulgarian municipalities and to represent them in a dignified manner at the international level.
The National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria was created - the first and only association of local authorities in the country.
